We can identify it for you

Bagging and sending a specimen for identification

Gather several specimens (whole and complete bodies when possible) and insert in a plastic “baggie”, or other container that will protect the body without crushing during mailing. You should be able to seal so the specimen will not fall out.

I suggest wrapping the insect with a few layers of tissue paper or a Kleenex tissue.

Ideally, a bubble-wrapped shipping envelope is perfect and will cost only about $0.50 or so to purchase.

Describe for me where you found the specimen, was water, rotted wood, paper or soil nearby…what was the area like where you found the specimen? Were there wings? Was there a food source nearby? Were there fecal droppings. Tell me everything around the specimen, which will help me in identifying it.

When I get the specimen, I will identify and email an answer to you as rapidly as possible with a solution to your problem. Remember...NAME, TOWN & EMAIL ADDRESS if you want me to respond. In the meantime, do not spray any insecticide or anything else, except a little mild liquid (Prell, Dove, Ivory, any soap will do...) and water mixed together which will foul its movment & wings and the insect will be smothered. (about 3-4 tbsp per qt. In an atomizing sprayer). Insects breathe in air through spiracles located along the body regions. The air is distributed throughout the body to areas needing the air for oxygenation. This is safe for you and will kill the insect without staining your floor, drapes or wall.

Insert your complete name, address, phone number and email address for a reply or follow up question I may have.

Mail the specimen to:
