How-to Control Subterranean
Termites
In the past 75 years, control has involved placing a
chemical barrier and / or recently an in-ground perimeter monitoring-baiting
system between the termite colony and the wood of the structure. In addition,
all wood-to-soil and rigid foam board / form-to-ground contact must be
eliminated. This is generally the building owner's responsibility, all wood
debris must be removed, and the wood moisture content should be reduced to below
20%.
Secondary and aerial colonies are controlled by
correcting the moisture problem within the structure and to dry out the
moisture-laden area. When it is desirable to rapidly reduce the secondary
infestation, this can be by treating with foam applications of termiticides or
an aerosol such as CB Borid Dust Insecticide w/ Boric Acid.
Control can be achieved via several different
methods. The methodology depends strictly on the situation and method of
construction. Not cost, or the method that is easiest. Treating termites
indiscriminately will not correct them…all it will do is make someone “feel
better” for a very short time.
