Inspection / Identification
Follow standard control procedures but do not forget to check the drains. For sewers, power dusting with silica gel is particularly effective. i.e. grease and septic tanks are often missed areas to inspect and treat in buildings, especially water sumps in high-rise buildings. Treating with gel baits is particularly effective provide a suitable place can be found inside the tank to support the bait.
A simple board or piece of plywood laying on the round can provide a great place of harborage for many roaches. Any item laying in close proximity to the ground can create water in the form of condensation which when added to the harborage factor creates two of the primary needs of a cockroach.
A simple piece of 3/4" - 1" PVC pipe about 6"long can create harborage and by placing a couple of grams or so of a suitable gel bait (Maxforce Roach Gel w/fipronil) inside the pipe, why a great place to "dine in" is created for the cockroach. Photo of the simple delivery device.
I have always liked to spray a growth regulator (Nylar which is packaged in one ounce bottles called I G Regulator) into all of the harborage areas, including under boards and objects in the yard in close proximity to a structure you are trying to protect. It is best applied to an unpainted surface, such as under the counter-top of a cabinet adjacent to the sink. There are many cracks and crevices for roaches to hide in a sink assembly on a counter top and these areas are generally damp and are an excellent source of moisture for the roach.
Best control is achieved by applying a barrier granular (such as Deltamethrin G) in a band about 5-10 feet around the structure to be protected. Also apply the granular application in dense vegetation such as Asiatic Jasmine, low groundcovers, densely growing plants of any type).
For further control, apply a band of a good residual insecticide such as Suspend SC around any joint, window, door threshold or other dissimilar building material used in the construct of the structure. Remember that dissimilar building materials frequently do not bond or can be permanently sealed and this allows for insects to enter.
Prevention
Be sure to check and adjust/replace threshold sweeps or seals to prevent any cockroach from entering. Remember, hey can get through a very tiny crack because their bodies are flexible and can squeeze through a very tiny crack. They are attracted to the difference of air temperature escaping from the many cracks around doors, windows, flashings, fascia boards and so forth.
Sanitation
Promote sanitation and neat orderliness to all members of your household to make sure that all of the clutter laying about in rooms and outside can't create vast harborage areas for the cockroach.
Initial Application
This is often the hardest part for a non-pest control professional to understand, you can be most effective when you think “like a roach”. That means to look around to see the conducive conditions that exist in the arewa where control is desired, then think where you would be if you were a roach, i.e. under a piece og plywood lying on the ground. (This creates a moist place which is a dark, there is little or no air circulation, the roach is upside-down on a non painted wood surface. If you were a roach, why these four things would place you in “hog-heaven”, truly an ideal place to be as a roach.
These five materials will achieve excellent results when applied in accordance with these and label instructions on each container.
Small particles of food are often a "feast" for a cockroach...remember....they have tiny mouths!
