We can identify it for you

Bagging and sending a specimen for identification

Gather several specimens (whole and complete bodies are absolutely essential for a good identification) and insert in a container that will not crush, such as a empty medicine bottle (plastic with a tight-fitting cap), or other container that will protect the body without crushing during mailing. Is very important to seal the container so the specimen will not fall out..

I suggest inserting the bottle or vial in a bubble wrap mailing container that can be sealed and mailed in the US Postal Service.

Ideally, a bubble-wrapped shipping envelope is perfect and will cost about $0.75 or so to purchase.  All you need then is an empty plastic medicine bottle - empty and cleaned out - of course!

Describe for me where you found the specimen, what town and state.  And was water, rotted wood, paper or soil nearby…what was the area like where you found the specimen? Were there wings? If so, send a few with the specimen.  Was there a food source nearby? Were there fecal droppings. Tell me everything around the specimen, which will help me in identifying it.

When I get the specimen, I will identify and email an answer to you as rapidly as possible with a solution to your problem. Remember...NAME, TOWN & EMAIL ADDRESS if you want me to respond.  I will not respond unless all of the information I have requested is sobmitted completely.  No exceptions!! In the meantime, if you must spray something...just use a little mild liquid (Prell, Dove, Ivory, any soap will do...) and water mixed together which will foul its movement & wings and the insect will be smothered. (about 3-4 tbsp per qt. In an atomizing sprayer). This is safe for you and will kill the insect without staining your floor, drapes or wall.

Insert  your complete name, address, phone number and email address for a reply or follow up question I may have.

Mail the specimen to:
